Ranger gets a decent amount of skill points per lvl, so it will allow you to maintain those skills as you lvl so you can disable traps (and pick locks). That will make your play experience less painful as traps are a big part of DDO. Another build you could try is 18 Paladin / 2 Rogue.

Currently doing my shifters life myself and i can say that the race does not have alot of synergy with alot of classes. However, like people said you could just build without the racial tree. For me tho, i found 2 builds that are actually good with shifters. First is ranger falconry, using wis to damage, get alot of wisdom from the shifter rage ...The pact/blast die you'd be losing by giving up 6 warlock levels would be more than you got back from DA, let alone the other caster levels and Abyss lock goodies like Rend. Abyss lock can already go undead at L15 anyway, and dont get DA till 14, so you're just pushing back your progression to get something redundant.

Some involve race/class/universal tree unlocks but a fair bit don't. I would say new players go look there instead of other places. His builds are really good for starters.
